Lymphoedema – Lipoedema: Your Wardrobe as Therapy

Choosing clothing when living with lipoedema or lymphoedema can be challenging. Body image concerns, restricted movement, heat, pain, and the impact on the lymphatic system are just some of the issues that come to mind. I don’t have any earth-shattering news to offer, but I do have a few simple ideas that can make daily dressing a little easier.
Although elegance is always a priority, comfort and ease of wear should come first. Natural fabrics—especially cotton—are ideal. Cotton is breathable, cooler in warm weather, and helps keep the skin dry. Your clothing choices will depend on your lifestyle and daily activities, but a good fit and quality fabric are essential for feeling comfortable and avoiding restricted movement or worsening symptoms.
Flowy blouses worn over trousers or tights, dresses, wide-legged pants, or a suit with the jacket sitting comfortably at the waist can all work beautifully. My own style is simple—I wear jeans all year round. That preference predates everything else.
The same principles apply when choosing medical compression garments. There is a wide range of fabrics available, including cotton blends. Some options are more stylish or discreet than others. Compression garments generally come in two categories:
Ready-to-wear (RTW): Usually knitted in a circular fashion.
Custom-made: Typically produced using a flat knit. This fabric is slightly thicker, has a seam, and is recommended for more severe or unstable lymphoedema, or when the limb does not fit standard sizing. This design is ideal for lipoedema management.
Medical compression garments use graduated compression, meaning the pressure is strongest at the smallest part of the limb (such as the ankle or wrist) and gradually decreases as it moves toward the heart. Many garments are available in a discreet, flattering style and some ranges offer a variety of colours.
It is recommended to wear your compression garments during exercise. If you choose compression tights, they can easily be worn as leggings with a longer top—no one will know you are wearing a medical garment underneath. And remember - people notice your face first. They say the first three minutes shape someone’s impression of you—so show your confidence. Your personality always shines through.
Your clothing is more than just fabric—it’s a tool that supports your wellbeing. By choosing comfort, good fit, and quality compression, you can manage symptoms more effectively while still expressing your personal style. When your wardrobe works with your body, everything feels a little easier.
"Elegance begins the moment you decide to feel comfortable in your own skin."
